Awardee of 2024
This year, we are pleased to award Ruben Sommaruga with the Baldi Lecture Award! Congratulations!
Ruben Sommaruga is professor for limnology and former director of the Department of Ecology at the University of Innsbruck. He started his research career studying hypereutrophic lakes and coastal lagoons, but later moved his focus to high mountain lakes. His long-standing research goals during the last three decades have been to understand how organisms adapted to the harsh environmental conditions typical of high elevation ecosystems and how lake processes are affected by different global changes. To target these goals, he uses a combination of field and laboratory experimental work, multidisciplinary approaches and a wide network of international cooperations. He has contributed to theoretical limnology with >150 articles in the areas of microbial ecology, photobiology, biogeochemistry, and global change. Recent studies included different areas of the world such as the Alps, the Andes, Himalayas, the Bale Mountains, and Greenland.
