The Power of Meta-analysis - Simone Cardoso & Kyle Morrison
December 2025
The lecture provides an overview of meta-analyses and evidence synthesis in environmental and aquatic sciences. Simone Cardoso is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), Brazil, and member of SIL Education Committee. Her research focuses on understanding the ecological mechanisms that link species traits to ecosystem functioning. Using plankton as a primary research model, she integrates ecological data and theory to understand the impacts of human driven changes on species and freshwater ecosystems, with emphasis on the effects of eutrophication, presence of invasive species, carbon emissions, mining tailings, emerging pollutants and more recently, the effects of floating photovoltaics.
The workshop provides tools for carrying out meta-analyses and evidence synthesis in environmental and aquatic sciences. Kyle Morrison is a PhD student at the University of New South Wales, Australia. His research focus has largely been on evidence syntheses methodologies in environmental sciences including tool/guideline development, methodological, and reporting practices, and elevating the utility of evidence syntheses to inform environmental policy-decisions. Kyle has also used evidence synthesis to explore the impacts of pesticides on aquatic ecosystems with a recent focus on fish behavioural responses. Some of Kyle’s most notable works have been published in Nature Sustainability, Environmental Pollution, Nature Communications, Global Change Biology, and Methods in Ecology and Evolution.
Tools and tricks for writing a paper faster ... and better - Michele Burford
June 2023
An online workshop of 1 hour with practical information and a presentation of different strategies for increasing the success of submissions to scientific journals, and an interactive question period. Professor Michele Burford is a researcher at the Australian Rivers Institute, Griffith University. She has published more than 200 scientific papers and books/chapters. She is an Associate Editor for the journals, Limnology and Oceanography, and Inland Waters.
Avoiding rejection: How to negotiate the science review process - David Hamilton
November 2022
The workshop provides practical information and a presentation of different strategies for increasing the success of submissions to scientific journals, alternating with exercises, questions, and discussion of the outcomes. David Hamilton is the Director of the Australian Rivers Institute and a Professor at Griffith University. His research interests are in cyanobacteria blooms, coupled physical-biogeochemical models of lakes, and nutrient dynamics. In recent years he has been closely involved in management and policy implementation for freshwater ecosystems. He has published more than 300 papers and is the editor-in-chief of Inland Waters and associate editor for Hydrobiologia and Aquatic Ecology.
