Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

EDI Mission Statement

The International Society of Limnology (SIL) is committed to fostering a global limnology community that is equitable, diverse, and inclusive. We welcome and encourage participation from all individuals regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity (including Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), disability, country of origin, or economic background and strive to provide a respectful, safe, and welcoming environment for everyone.  Embracing this full spectrum of human diversity is essential to our mission of advancing inland water science and policy worldwide.

SIL believes that diverse perspectives and experiences strengthen our understanding of inland aquatic ecosystems, leading to more innovative and just solutions. We pledge to identify and break down systemic barriers that have historically excluded or marginalized certain groups in limnology, and we will actively implement initiatives to promote equal opportunities for meaningful participation and recognition across our membership. Through this commitment, we aim to cultivate a professional culture of respect, collaboration, and accountability that drives excellence in limnology for the benefit of all communities and aquatic environments.

Core EDI Principles

  • Equity and Fairness: SIL is dedicated to equity and fairness in all its practices. We strive to ensure equitable treatment and opportunity for every member, actively working to eliminate biases or systemic inequities that might disadvantage any group. Fairness means that our policies, from membership recruitment to awards and recognition, are applied consistently and inclusively, with support directed to those who face historical or structural disadvantages.
  • Diverse Representation: We are committed to reflecting the diversity of the global limnology community across SIL’s membership and leadership. This includes broad representation across gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, identity, and ability, with a focus on elevating underrepresented voices. Promoting diversity at all levels of the Society enriches our perspectives and strengthens collective decision-making.
  • Inclusive Culture and Belonging: SIL is committed to fostering an inclusive culture where all members feel safe, respected, and valued. We promote mentorship, open dialogue, and mutual respect, while proactively rejecting discrimination, prejudice, and stereotyping. Every member should feel a strong sense of belonging, knowing their presence is welcomed, their perspectives are heard, and their contributions are appreciated.
  • Access and Opportunity: SIL is committed to removing barriers to participation and ensuring equitable access to its programs and resources, especially for individuals from underrepresented regions and backgrounds. We work to remove practical barriers to participation including financial, physical (including disability-related), or institutional, so all members can engage fully in our events and programs. This includes offering accommodations and support such as travel grants, reduced fees, flexible participation modes, and accessible facilities, ensuring that our conferences, publications, and resources are attainable to the widest possible audience.
  • Accountability and Continual Improvement: SIL is committed to setting clear EDI goals, regularly evaluating progress, and establishing mechanisms (e.g., EDI Committee) to ensure we uphold our commitments. We will remain transparent about our challenges and achievements. By continually assessing outcomes and listening to member feedback, we strive for ongoing improvement in creating a more inclusive, and welcoming society for all.
