Freshwater Zooplankton and Literature at the National University of Singapore (NUS)
Over 13,000 freshwater zooplankton samples preserved in formalin, and many mounted specimens on slides, were transferred to NUS in October 1997. Accompanying the samples were over 18,500 scientific reprints, identification guides, theses, lists of identified species, and other notes.
The samples came from forty-two countries on six continents. Over five hundred samples came from each of the following countries: Canada, Ethiopia, the Indian subcontinent, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Nigeria, Philippines and Sri Lanka.
The focus of the reprint collection is zoology and freshwater biology. It is strong in limnology, especially tropical zooplankton, aquatic invertebrates, fish parasitology, reservoir fisheries and rice field ecology. It contains many difficult to obtain papers in Russian and Italian on rice field ecology and fish culture. Over twenty M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses and over sixty scientific papers are based on material from the collection extending from 1971 – 1998.
The material and reprints are housed in The Zoological Reference Collection. There is a card index to samples and reprints but this is being computerized. Those wishing to have access to the collection and literature should contact:

Ukrainian Entomological Society
The Ukrainian Entomological Society includes more than 400 members from different institutes, universities, and nature conservation organisations that are working on various scientific, environmental, ecological, agricultural studies and conservation projects in 15 provinces of the Ukraine.
The Society is involved in the study of Ukrainian reserves, including the Danube Delta Reserve, the Black Sea Reserve, the Carpathian Reserve, Ukrainian Steppe Reserve, and reserves in the Crimean Semi-island (near the Black Sea) and others.
The Society is collaborating with professionals and non-professionals on questions of nature conservation, possible expeditions, nature photographic exhibitions, collaborative studies, publications, meetings and friendly contacts.
Copies of ecological and entomological publications sent to our Library will be very valuable for our members.

GLODIR
The Global Directory of Marine (and Freshwater) Scientists is a database containing information on scientists and their scientific interests. The GLODIR is a product developed under the auspices of the IODE’s (International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange) Group of Experts on Marine Information Management.
An on-line input system of GLODIR has been developed. The system allows for individual scientists to submit (and in future update ) information on their scientific activities so as to enable the marine science community, as well as policy makers and other stakeholders in marine related issues, to easily identify experts in subjects of their interest. The system sues ASFA subject codes for standardised description of activities. The database can be searched on-line. You can search by name of scientists, organisation, country, URL, ASFA categories, free text and environment. Register with, and consultation of, the database are free at the following site: www.unesco.org/ioc/infserv/glodir.htm.
While this seems to be mostly a marine directory, it contains 3,166 names from 100 countries obtained in February 1998, among which approximately 860 were freshwater scientists.

Albert Einstein World Award
Professor Charles Goldman, Department of Enviornmental Science & Policy and Director of the UC (University of California) Tahoe Research Group was presented the 1998 Albert Einstein World Award of Science in recognition of his valuable and pioneering contributions in the field of environmental sciences.
According to Esteban Meszaros Wild, Secretary General, Consejo Cultural Mundial, the prize recognizes Goldman’s ‘productive trajectory for more than 39 years of research on Lake Tahoe and the environmental research program created and sustained in California and throughout the world which has brought true benefit to mankind’.
The award is an acknowledgement from members of the World Cultural Council, a scientific community representing more than 60 countries. The council is based in Mexico City. The presentation was made in November at a ceremony hosted by Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand.
Goldman began tracking Lake Tahoe’s water quality in 1959, one year after he joined the UC Davis faculty. In 1967, he established the UC Tahoe Research Group. His research is widely recognized as a major force in stemming the lake’s ongoing degradation.
Geographical Information System (GIS) of World Lakes Limnological Studies
There is a gap in understanding spatial (in a latitude-altitude space) morphological and other global relationships for lake physical regimes including thermal and water ones. The total capacity of freshwater contained in world lakes is not well documented. One reason is due to the lack of a global database containing data from studied lakes. Information on most world lakes is restricted to their location and surface area. According to the authors’ estimates, bathymetrical surveys carried out in approximately to 3 – 4×105 lakes and limnological studies have not covered more than 3.5 – 4.5×104 lakes. A Geographical Information System for limnological studies of the world lakes and reservoirs (GIS WORLDLAKE) constructed in MapInfo, Windows, is in progress. The original database (Excel files) contains information in the following categories: geography, morphometry, hydrology, meteorology and climatology, water chemistry, thermal structure, comments and references.
Currently the database uses 50 Mb of memory and covers more than 20,000 mainly limnologically studied lakes from 144 countries (Europe – >13,500, North America – >2,200, Central and Southern America – >470, Africa – >350, Asia – >2,500, Australia, New Zealand and Oceania – >700, Antarctica – >90), and more than 2,000 reservoirs. However, there are data gaps for such regions as: the Amazon, Himalayas, Tibet, northern and eastern Siberia, Central Yakut, South American Andes, Cordilleras, Scandinavia, some equatorial and arid zones of Africa and Asia, Central America, Antarctica, Oceania, Greenland and some others.
We are setting up the GIS WORLDLAKE on the Internet and kindly invite colleagues from the global limnological community for their contributions.
