Prize for Tropical Limnology | 2e Prix de Limnologie tropicale
In 1992 the Belgian Royal Academy of Overseas Sciences set up a Fund in order to reward with a prize named the “Jean-Jacques and Berthe Symoens Prize for Tropical Limnology” a memoir of great scientific value, unpublished or published for less than 4 years, written in English, French, Spanish or Dutch, on a subject related to tropical limnology. The prize amounts to 100,000 BEF (about 2400 US$) and is awarded every three years. It will be awarded for the second time in 1999. Environmental Database Course
In co-operation with the Centre for Knowledge Transfer in Information Technologies and the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Ljubljana, the Department of Intelligent Systems presents courses and workshops titled “Analysis of ecological data with machine learning”. These are intended for end users and are typically attended by people from industry and governmental institutions that deal with different types of environmental problems, such as water quality monitoring/control and waste management.

The International Society for Microbial Ecology
At the International Symposium on Microbial Ecology (ISME 8) meeting (August 9-14) held in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada), the approximately 1500 delegates were told about the formation of a new society for microbial ecology. Microbial ecology has grown substantially in the past decade as the study of microorganisms in the global environment has increased. To better promote scientific activities in microbial ecology, the International Committee on Microbial Ecology (ICOME) is establishing the International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME). In addition to the publication of the proceedings from the triennial symposia, such as ISME 8, and Advances in Microbial Ecology, the new society has reached an agreement with the publishers of Microbial Ecology to make it the official journal of the Society. The Society will assume editorial control in 1999, will expand the number of pages and will make on-line and hard copy versions available to all regular Society members.

New President of IAD
In April 1998, Jürg Bloesch (Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology, EAWAG, Department of Limnology, CH-8600 Dübendorf, Switzerland; email: email@example.com) was elected President of the Internationale Arbeitsgemeinschaft Donauforschung (International Association for Danube Research (IAD). IAD was founded in 1956 to promote and coordinate activities in the fields of limnology, water management and water protection in the Danube Basin. The Association is incorporated into SIL and is governed by its statutes. Pius Stadelmann (Cantonal Agency for Environmental Protection, Lucerne, Switzerland) succeeds him as Swiss National Representative of IAD.
SIL 98 CD and Video
During the Congress, delegates were able to collect a CD-ROM containing all the abstracts, the participants list (with addresses) and the full list of names and addresses of SIL members. The disk includes the software necessary for reading the files and instructions on how to install it. There are some copies of the CD remaining which will be sold on a first come, first serve basis to any member who sends US$10 to SIL98, University College, Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland.
A souvenir video was made during the Congress and some copies are still available either for delegates who did not buy one or any other member who wishes to see what went on at the Congress – opening and closing ceremonies, snippets of the week’s social events, etc. Anyone who would like to have a copy of the video should send US$30 to Brian Kelly, Audio Visual Centre, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland.
